Default Monks & xp?

I was just wondering. I was contemplating the idea of being a monk primary. i havent every played as one in any of the beta's, i was wondering how do they gain xp in the way a normal character does. a norm char gets xp when he kills something right, so how does a monk get enough xp to stay level with the players around him or is he just expected to get the little xp when he every now and then decides to kill something rather than heal his party. or do they have some other source of xp income like when they heal, or is some portion of the groups xp given to him based on how good they are doing? or does he just get the 1000 or so when they finish a mission?

Well, you don't have to personally kill something to get experience... if someone in your party kills a creature nearby, you get experience for it as well... So they gain experience like anyone else. You could, technically, level up without ever killing a single creature.

It works like this. When a creature's killed xp is earned. Use a skill on the creature and you get xp. Use a skill on someone using a skill on that creature and you'll get xp. Use a skill on someone getting xp and you'll get xp.

So, to earn xp you have to deal damage with an attack, create a hex on a creature, buff up with an enchantment, heal with a spell, and so on. In other words do just about anything when fighting a battle. As long as you're not just standing there doing nothing, you'll be getting xp. Monks get xp for healing their Warrior teammate who's swinging away. A Nec can get xp for BiPing the Monk that's healing. A Mesmer could get xp for shattering the hex that the creature the Warrior's fighting put on the Necromancer. And so on, long xp chains can be formed just as easily as everyone can swing away. So Monks are likely to never miss out on experience as long as their teammates are taking damage.

While I'm at it, xp is split evenly depending on how many shares there are to go around. If a creature's worth 100 xp, one person gets 100 xp. Two people killing that same creature get 50 xp. Three characters get 33 xp. 4 characters 25 xp. And so on. The amount of xp you'll actually get depends on the level differences between you and the thing that died but everyone gets an equal share depending on how many people earned xp.

Been there, done that. One of my first characters was a Mo/E, and when it finally clicked that the party really needed a full-time healer and I learned to lay off the nukes, I actually started gaining more experience than when I was killing things myself, because the party as a whole was more effective, and as part of that party, I benefitted from our increased effectiveness.

(How did I ever manage to enjoy the WPE, knowing absolutely nothing about how to play this game effectively? The mind boggles...)
